Checking and improving your resume

  1. Go to the Resume Tool and upload your resume as a PDF or Word (.docx) file.
  2. Optional but recommended: add the job you're applying for. Paste the job description, or paste the link to the posting and we'll read it for you (a few sites, such as LinkedIn, block this — paste the text from those).
  3. The free instant check appears right away: length, sections, contact details, measurable results and — if you added a job — the keywords from the posting your resume is missing.
  4. Click Analyze Resume for written AI feedback: what's working, what to fix, and specific suggestions (1 credit).
  5. Click Generate Improved Resume for a fully rewritten version (1 credit). With a Word file, your fonts, colors and layout are kept — only the wording changes.

Adding missing keywords

When you add a job, you'll see which of its keywords your resume already has and which are missing. Pick the missing ones you honestly have experience with and choose Pick keywords to add — the job is saved to My Jobs with your resume, ready to tailor. See Tailoring your resume to a job.

See your resume the way an ATS does

Signed in, open Resume check (or 🔍 ATS check next to any resume in My Resumes). It's free and shows the plain text an applicant tracking system reads, which contact details it picks up, the sections it finds in order, and warnings for tables, text boxes, columns and contact details hidden in a header. The same page scores how human your writing sounds and lists buzzwords like "results-driven" or "spearheaded", with a better way to say each.

Where your results go

Every improved resume is saved automatically in My Resumes, so you can download it again or use it for another job.

Long resumes take more AI work: 2 credits for resumes over about 2 pages, 3 credits for resumes over about 4 pages. You'll always see a note when more than 1 credit is used.

Common questions

What is an ATS check?

Most employers use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to read and rank resumes. The check flags things that commonly trip one up — missing sections or contact details, no measurable results and missing keywords from the job.

Will the AI make up experience?

No. It rewords and reorganizes what is already in your resume. It never adds employers, job titles, dates, degrees or skills you don't have.
