What is an ATS?

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software employers use to collect, sort and search job applications. Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS and Taleo are common examples. When you apply online, the ATS pulls the text out of your resume, files it into fields such as contact details, work history, education and skills, and lets recruiters search and rank applicants by keyword.

That means two things matter before a person ever reads your resume: the ATS has to be able to read it, and it has to find the keywords the recruiter is searching for.

What our ATS resume checker looks at

How to make your resume ATS-friendly

  1. Use a simple, single-column layout. Text boxes, columns built from tables, headers and footers can scramble the reading order.
  2. Use standard headings. "Work Experience" beats a creative label like "Where I've Been".
  3. Mirror the job description's language. If the posting says "project management", don't only say "ran projects". Use the exact skill names where they're true for you.
  4. Spell out acronyms once. Write "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)" so you match either search.
  5. Save as .docx or a text-based PDF. Avoid image-only PDFs and unusual file types.
  6. Tailor for each application. One generic resume rarely matches every posting's keywords. Tailoring your resume to the job description takes seconds with AI.

See the plain text an ATS reads

Signed in, open Resume check (or "🔍 ATS check" next to any resume in My Resumes) to see your resume exactly as an ATS reads it: the plain text, the name, email, phone, LinkedIn and location it picks up, the sections it finds in order, and warnings for tables, text boxes, columns and contact details hidden in a header. The same page scores how human your writing sounds and flags buzzwords like "results-driven" and "spearheaded". Free, no credits.

From ATS check to fixed resume

The free check shows you what's wrong. With a free account, AidMyCV's AI goes further: it explains each issue, suggests stronger wording line by line and generates an improved version of your resume. Upload a Word file and the improved copy keeps your own fonts, layout, tables and bullets — names, dates, employers and job titles are never changed.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ATS resume checker really free?

Yes. The instant ATS check runs on the home page with no account. A free account adds credits for the full AI review and rewrite.

Can an ATS read PDF resumes?

Most modern ATS software reads text-based PDFs well. Problems come from scanned or image-only PDFs, where there's no text to extract. Our checker tells you if your file has too little readable text.

Does an ATS automatically reject resumes?

Usually the ATS ranks and filters rather than rejecting outright, but a resume that is hard to read or missing the posting's keywords tends to land low in a recruiter's search results — which in practice means it may not be seen.

Is my resume kept private?

Your resume is processed only to produce your results and is never used to train AI models. Files uploaded before you sign in are deleted after 24 hours.
